Throughout the season 2014/15, Kino Šiška Kiosk hosted nine young Slovenian artists representing contemporary art currents in Slovenia. Spread over nine months, nine exhibitions within the Young Artist Series 2.0 were implemented successfully as a production of curators Tia Čiček and Dora Trček. The final exhibition of the Young Artist Series 2.0 will bring together nine artists working with various media under a shared title and topic – Common Space. The exhibition will be implemented in Kortil Gallery in Rijeka, Croatia with the support of Croatian cultural worker Antonio Kiselić.
The group exhibition Common Space will feature the Series artists Polona Drobnič, Asiana Jurca Avci, Sai Pan, Martina Jurak, Emil Kozole, Jaka Vatovec, Maruša Meglič, Nejc Franetič – Deso and Rina Barbarić presenting their new works focusing on a reflection of the “common space” they belong to. It refers both to the space of their intimate existential experience, their freedom and autonomous creativity, as well as the space of social constraints and insecurities, of complex and dialogic contemporary identities. The title Common Space relates to various attitudes, experiences, lifestyles and identities of young artists whose works will be presented in a shared exhibition space, but it also relates to the common social space, i.e. Slovenia, and the influence of its art scene on each individual artist. Intimate moments with friends and family are blended into the social critique of everyday life, while snapshots from the urban environment are combined with domestic rural scenes. Nine diverse artists have tackled the topic in original and individual ways, based on their own experience (study exchange, living abroad or creating in home environment, etc.) and various art techniques (painting, illustration sculpture, photography, multimedia, installations, etc.). A zine workshop will also be held as part of the Common Space exhibition, resulting in a group zine to replace the exhibition catalogue.
The Common Space exhibition thereby draws parallels between the production of young artists featured in similar venues and nearby urban centres for contemporary art scene. Furthermore, Ljubljana and Rijeka have been friendship towns since 1979, and at both locations young artists are being faced with similar financial restrictions and working conditions. A reflexive attitude towards own shared environment and limitations is used by younger generations in both towns as a source of creativity. Rijeka is a candidate city for the European Capital of Culture 2020, also boasting a blossoming art production by younger generations. Such international cooperation provides young Slovenian artists with precious experience in reaching towards the public abroad, and in exploring a foreign, yet similar artistic environment. On the other hand, artists from Rijeka will be enabled insight into the contemporary production of younger generations and networking with peers from a friendship town.
