In the context of the Biennial of Independent Illustration, Theremidi Orchestra are embarking on research into visual recording of noise or the so-called visual music, which will be the topic of the two-day Hrupopis workshop. Visual music is a method of using visual structures in music and music structures in visual patterns. Hrupopis is seeking the answer to what should be done about visual music in the post-digital context, in which the key issue is to integrate the physical space and digital and analogue technologies, or how to make the virtual as material as possible.
On day one, participants will learn how to compose/solder electronic circuits and gain basic knowledge on electronic elements forming analogue audio devices. They will compose one or more DIY instruments based on first or second edition electronic kits: (1) TouchTone, a touch-based feedback amplifier system, (2) Theremini 4011, mini theremin, (3) MicroNoise, oscillator, (4) SuperinLow, low-frequency oscillator.
On day two, participants will be testing audio devices and will also form an associative visual recording as a group, which they will then use as the guideline for a 12-minute audio improvisation. Their research will close with a public performance, whereas the analogue audio and digital visual contents will be integrated in postproduction into an AV video, which is the final result of the group work.
Theremidi Orchestra | BIO
Theremidi Orchestra was formed after the Theremin and Theremidi physical interface workshop, organised by Ljudmila – Ljubljana Digital Media Lab in May 2011. The workshop was run in the comradeship of Borut Savski, member of Cirkulacija 2. The fascination with electromagnetic sound waves grew into research and formation of sounds with DIY accessories, aerials, conductive ink, umbrellas, wire ducks, air tubes, flowers and scrap metal. Either indoors or outdoors, their live appearances are more like experimental interventions, advanced workshops or stage shows, rather than conventional concerts. This hands-on electro noise ensemble exists in the present continuous, while referring to the history of electronic music. The number of members ranges from eight to ten, sometimes even twelve, and the Orchestra even features its very own Female Section. In 2013, the double EP 4011 by Theremidi Orchestra was released on the independent label Trivia Records, and soon we will be able to get hold of their second studio album. Theremidi Orchestra are: Ida Hiršenfelder, Dare Pejić, Tina Dolinšek, Robertina Šebjanič, Saša Spačal, Dušan Zidar, Luka Frelih, Tilen Sepič and Simon Bergoč.
The workshop at the Biennial of Independent Illustration will be devised by: Simon Bergoč, Robertina Šebjanič, Tina Dolinšek, Ida Hiršenfelder and Dare Pejić.
