Crippled Black Phoenix were formed in Bristol in 2004 by members of bands Mogwai, Electric Wizard, Iron Monkey and Gonga. When they were recording their debut, they were taken under the protection of Barrow Geoff of Portishead, who let them release a series of existing albums on his own label Invada Records. What was meant to be a collaborative music project, at first only active occasionally, in time grew into a regular active band. Stubbornly resisting to be classified into a single genre, they’re bursting with influences of stoner prog, freak folk, all the way to psychedelic doom and cello post rock. Their music merges eclectic influences of old and new ranges of sounds. Although a selection of renowned and changing names cannot guarantee excellent music, this is what it is all about with Crippled Black Phoenix, Justin Greaves still remaining their mastermind: from the very beginning they have been caught in certain timeless magic that has enabled them to make an impression both with their albums as well as excellent and lengthy stage shows.
They called attention to themselves with their very first albums – A Love of Shared Disasters (2007), The Resurrectionists (2009), Night Raider (2009), (Mankind) The Crafty Ape (2012), which they already presented in Ljubljana, and last year’s White Light Generator (2014). Their first-rate discography was further enriched with significant EP’s: I, Vigilante (2010), No Sadness or Farewell (2012) and Oh’ Ech-oes (2015), live recording Live Poznan (2013) and compilation 200 Tons of Bad Luck (2009).
Their most recent album New Dark Age Tour EP 2015 A.D. is already featured at their ongoing autumn European tour, but Crippled Black Phoenix are amidst keen preparations for their new release on Season of Mist.
