In November, Kino Šiška will be taken over by the 5th edition of the Biennial of Slovenian Independent Illustration. The Independent Biennial will again host more than 20 artists and art collectives creating at the margins of various practices. Aside from the exhibition presenting the works of all participating artists, individual auteur projects will be on view in various locations across Ljubljana. To celebrate the opening day, Design Breakfast, a series of talks entitled 15 Minutes of Fame and an exhibition of Finnish visual poetry are also being held in Kino Šiška on 9 November, as well as two workshops later on during the Biennial.
The Independent Biennial is a periodical event exploring the fields and contexts of contemporary illustration and its usage, directly supporting and promoting the authors and well as helping to establish the visual culture in Slovenia, while seeking to form inward and outward ties. The independent platform (formed in 2007) emerged from the need to redefine illustration as a concept, having long been surpassed by modern creative practices, while a whole generation of young artists was being pushed to the margin of artistic practices due to the unresponsive professional field. Having been active for six years, we witnessed a growth of creativity in illustration and acknowledgement about experimental practices within illustration being a source of irreplaceable roguish freedom of intermedia expression. With each new edition, the Biennial presents a fresh combination of authors with their own specific aesthetic and conceptual charges, always serving first and foremost as a homage to authors. It is them who, despite the harsh working conditions in the field of culture and visual practices, are driven by enthusiasm, curiosity, imagination, freshness, freedom as authors, and autonomy as the key condition of their creativity and lifestyle.
