This time, the Vegova Street Gallery is hosting Andrej Štular, a maverick all-around artist who has remained faithful to his original poetics and research-guerrilla approach throughout his diverse creative efforts.
The author will be presenting to passers-by three mixed media installations or collages. He combines photographs of damp, mouldy, rusty details of the tissue of the city with series of (retro) images and with text, all the time toying with the ambiguity of advertising slogans and messages. Consequently, the works exhibited function as multi-layered art declarations enabling diverse semantic interpretations. The author has thus intentionally abused the poster as a medium of mass communication, and challenged the viewer to (re)think.
Although he claims for his works never to express social criticism, hints at the current social reality can be traced in them. Being a tireless observer of the world and everything around him, he could not (and would not) possibly avoid that. At this occasion, he quietly warns of “refugees trying to reach Europe while others are living their careless lives, refusing to admit that the world has been changing. Our (careless) lives and our social reality as such are also our own responsibility. The only question is whether our world view is shaped only from the outside, or whether we might make decisions and have a mind of our own.” If it isn’t so, it might be wise to construct a new one.
Andrej Štular is an artist working in various artistic spheres. Areas of illustration and comics, painting, sculpture, photography and film as well as puppet and set design are all represented quite equally in his work. So far he has published five comic albums: Lustri (2000), Kompost (2008), Živa sem! (2011), Bežimo, svet se podira! (2014), Kronike (2015). He typically combines various visual techniques, and also likes to recycle. With regard to contents, he is no stranger to anything at least slightly human – he often takes a grotesque, poetical and ironic approach to tackle topics depicting the psychopathology of our lives and questioning the structure of contemporary social landscape. As well as showcasing his work in solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia, he has participated in several international comics and puppetry festivals around the world. He has received several awards for his works. He lives in works in Kranj.
