Ballerinas is a performance that combines the physical aspect of theatre and the original text in an effort to document, demystify, and explain what (ballet) dancers actually do, why they picked dancing as a vocation, and what challenges they face in both their work and personal lives. The performance holds to no illusions, no fiction, nor acting: on stage the dancers speak for themselves as they talk about their experience and opinion about art, politics, apoliticism, gender, society, the stereotypes they are fighting more or less successfully, and their continued survival in the profession that, at first blush, is perceived as glamorous.
Minja Bogavac (Belgrade 1982) is a writer, dramaturg and a theatre and stage artist. She graduated dramaturgy from the Faculty of Drama Arts, Belgrade. Besides being a writer she also performs slam poetry, is a permanent associate of the Bitef Dance Company, and Bitef Festival, and of the Youth organisation Centar E8. She is also a member of the Drama Mental Studio.
