“In the performance Still Standing You, dancers Pieter Ampe and Guilherme Garrido fight in a way brutal and convincing that it wouldn’t be possible at all if they weren’t great friends,” wrote a Flemish paper after the premiere of their duet in 2010. The dancers and choreographers Pieter Ampe and Guillherme Gui Garrido, the former Flemish and the latter Portuguese, presented Still Difficult Duet in 2007 and then realised their only option is to continue.
The testosterone-filled dance duo uses playful and real brutality – with which the actors address the other body – to fight for a male relationship on the level of friendship, intimacy, camaraderie, childlikeness, with Ampe and Garrido developing this relationship beyond the metaphorical border of bare life. Still Standing You is, brutal as it may be, a beautiful study about ecstasies and problems of human relationships. At the same time the duet is a product of longer, thorough procedural work, creative maturity from which the creators can come changed and richer. Co-festival wishes to affirm such methods of (choreographic) work.
In the choreographic meeting of the Belgian-Polish connection, both dancers open the field of varied dance passages and take a humorous look at their kaleidoscope friendship. The performance contains nudity.
