The film Status Zero depicts the issue of the youngest unemployed in Slovenia – people from the margins who failed to finish school and seem almost doomed to a lifetime of unemployment. FB event>
Guys between 18 and 22 years of age and a 16-year-old girl represent different profiles, yet at the same time the characteristic types of the youngest unemployed. One has already been in prison for violent behaviour, the second concluded only primary school before falling into extensive partying, the third comes from a well-situated but dysfunctional family. All are registered at the employment service and all three are enrolled in the Youth Project Learning programme (YPL).
The documentary begins at an YPL course, then follows the stories of the protagonists. Watching their lives, we observe the issue of youth unemployment in Slovenia, how society tries to help them, how it stigmatises them and how it holds them back. Alongside their fates, the fates of those who live and socialise with them unfold as well – their families, friends, and the public officials that handle their cases.
The film primarily depicts their intimate hardships and hopes. At the same time, we learn how difficult it is for young people to become employable, once they have become unemployed, what the causes of their problems are, and to what extent these are conditioned by society.
