Bernard Kolle is one of the few, if not the only comics artist in Slovenia who is making a living off of comics. Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of him, as he publishes exclusively abroad. Celje publishing label Risar just issued the complete edition of Diamants, drawn for the French market and written by Agnes and Jean-Claude Bartoll.

Kolle was born in Slavonska Požega in 1966, then a good twenty years later pursued love to Ljubljana, where his future wife was studying. Already while in Zagreb, he drew for the Tom and Jerry licensed comics, then tried out the German and American market, before settling down at French publisher Glenat. After Diamants, he drew the Antarctica and Le Naufrage du Titanic series, and now he is working on a new project. Kolle draws in the ligne claire – clear lines – style, with photographically precise and detailed drawings, held in high esteem among the French.

Comics author and publicist Iztok Sitar will ask Kolle about his drawing beginnings, the differences in working for the American and French comics markets, and his four-part family saga Diamants, as well as his latest work in progress – Kolle’s own album, currently being drawn for the Slovenian market. Kolle is also a regular guest at comics festivals, which is why he and Sitar will also touch on the topic of festival events abroad, in Yugoslavia and in Slovenia.

Organisation: Kino Šiška.
