LISA HANNIGAN

Lisa Hannigan first came to light as an angel-voiced, somewhat mysterious figure singing harmonies alongside folk rock star Damien Rice. They played together for seven years, but it wasn’t until the release of her solo debut Sea Sew in 2008 that the full spectrum of her abilities became apparent. A joyous kaleidoscope of love songs, laments, sea shanties and glockenspiels, with a cover hand-stitched by Lisa herself, the self-released album was a runaway success, nominated for a Choice award in Ireland and a Mercury Music Prize in the UK. The ecstatic reception gave Hannigan the confidence to explore deeper, darker emotions. Passenger, which came out in 2011, centred around the pain of leaving and the sense of apartness consequent to a life spent in constant motion. If Sea Sew bobs beautifully on the surface, you could say that Passenger explores the undercurrents of passion and heartache beneath the waves.

After returning from a two-year tour in support of Passenger and starting to write a new album in a new home, Hannigan tasted the alienation inherent to the London megalopolis. Having been used to playing musical ideas through with her colleagues, she found herself stuck in a vicious cycle, luckily broken by an email from The National guitarist Aaron Dessner: “Hey, if you ever want to do something together…” Her response was at hand and after a few months of brainstorming, it was recording time. Since its release in August 2016, the album has received praise from critics and fans alike, with the Guardian praising the “stunningly pretty songs with quietly powerful undertones”, while The Telegraph described it as “subtle and gauzy but loaded with emotion”, calling Hannigan’s voice “an incredible instrument, drawing on both opera and folk, with a softness and intimacy”.

Saint Sister, formed in November 2014, is the creation of Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty. Their music draws from early Celtic harp traditions, 1960s folk and electronic pop to create “atmosfolk”—a mix of soulful vocal harmonies, dreamy synth and electro-acoustic harp. Their songs convinced both their local and international critics, as well as Arcade Fire‘s Will Butler, whom they warmed up for at the beginning of their career.

Daniel Vezoja is a singer-songwriter from Brežice. He released his first solo album Where the Light Resides in December 2016, to great critical acclaim. The album was heralded by the singles ‘I Hope The Wind Knows (feat. Joanna Marie)’ and ‘Suzanna Smiling’. This time around he will perform at Kino Šiška with a full band.

Daniel’s independent music career started about three years ago, when he launched his solo acoustic project after the dissolution of his former band TrainStation and focused on his first love – song writing. His first solo live show was at an open mic night in Dublin, where he fell in love with the local music scene and kept coming back as much as he could. During that time, he met renowned Irish producer Gavin Glass, with whom he later recorded his debut at the Orphan Recording studio. He has performed a lot since the release of his first single ‘I Hope The Wind Knows’, including opening stints for Damien Jurado and Lola Marsh at Kino Šiška, at the Lent and MENT Ljubljana festivals, warming up for Dillon at A38 in Budapest, at Belgrade festival Indirekt, at Ferrara Art Festival in Italy, and at Canalaphonic festival in Dublin.
