Rape is an act of physical and sexual violence; a joke is a psychic disruption, sometimes sexual.
In her performance, American artist Vanessa Place tells rape jokes as a physical act of sexual disruption. Like violence, it’s all in the execution.
In his response, Mladen Dolar will address the question of rape jokes, the disturbing nature of their disruptiveness, the context of political correctness, the nature of laughter, the real and symbolic violence, tolerance and zero tolerance, jokes and transgression.

Vanessa Place is an artist and criminal defence lawyer who often works with concepts of of criminality and poetry. Place was the first poet to perform as part of the Whitney Biennial. A content advisory was posted.
Mladen Dolar is a Professor and a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. He is the author of a number of books, best known for Opera’s Second Death (co-authored with Slavoj Žižek, Routledge, 2001) and A Voice and Nothing More (MIT Press, 2006).
