There are many who, on grey days, still find solace in remembering one of the wonderful sonic voyages that the incredible Australian trio The Necks, “the link between the corporeal and the mental, the sensuous and the psychological, the tangible and the immense”, as described by Hrupmag, has taken Šiška on. That’s why we’re extremely excited to announce the eagerly awaited return of this jewel of improvised music at its 30th anniversary and the release of its intoxicating new album Unfold!
Even though the Necks will take to Šiška’s stage for the third time already, one needn’t fear boredom or a rehash, as each performance by the group is a unique event, completely improvised and adapted to the acoustic specifics of the venue. Over the past three decades, Chris Abrahams (piano), Lloyd Swanton (bass) and Tony Buck (drums) have thus built a reputation as masters of their own musical language of improvisation, constructed around repetition, subtle shifts and layering. With it, they craft an extremely dense, hypnotic sound of orchestral breadth that convinces you, takes you over and carries you away, bestowing on the trio labels such as “among the world’s greatest forces in music” (LA Times), “a sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals” (The Guardian) and even “the greatest band in the world” (Geoff Dyer on BBC Radio 3).
Despite a lengthy career – they headed off on their first European tour more than 20 years ago! – the Necks, who have also collaborated with Swans, Brian Eno and Evan Parker, certainly aren’t running out of steam. Just this year, they supported Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on their Australian tour, played several tours in the USA and Europe, and released another magnificent album via drone deity Stephen O’Malley‘s (Sunn O))), Burning Witch, …) label. Their acclaimed 19th studio release Unfold was described by Pitchfork as an album on which “ideas fly by in a way they never have with this band. Each compressed piece simply pushes you along to the next, eager to witness how a quarter-century-old act can again reshape your perception of drums, piano, and upright bass.” Let it be November already!
