Academically trained painter Eva Juričan draws inspiration from the composition and colourfulness of late 1980s and early 1990s subcultures on the West Coast in California. Together with the greenery kindly loaned by the Abandoned Plants Sanctuary, her colourful visual expression, varied media and love of neon pink ropes and tape will recreate a skateboarding jungle in Kino Šiška’s upper lobby.
The painter utilises various materials and technique combinations, though lively colours are always present as a consequence of her interest in alternative and urban art. The classic image of a Californian neighbourhood or road is usually complemented by a simple graffiti tag or longer inscription, transferring the artwork from the merely mimetic to the reflexive. In doing so, the author crosses the temporal and geographical gap between Ljubljana in 2018 and Los Angeles in the late 1980s. The neon pink tape serves as a simple yet significant visual element, as the thread linking the paintings and installations together and anchoring them within a unified exhibition space.
Eva Juričan (1992) is a postgraduate student of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. In 2015, she displayed her work for the first time, at a group exhibition in the Celica hostel at Metelkova in Ljubljana. She graduated the same year, with her thesis titled Street Art from the Street to the Canvas. She has held several solo exhibitions, as well as participated in the AIR4 group exhibition at Ravnikar Gallery Space. Besides painting, she is also interested in illustration, photography and design. Currently, she is a member of the Bum Bum Banana cultural and art society, active primarily in the promotion of alternative music and art in Slovenia.
The Abandoned Plants Sanctuary focuses on potted plants that various companies, flower shops or individuals discard when they begin to wither and become unattractive or simply because they don’t have the time or the space for them anymore. The Sanctuary members are devoted to rescuing these plants, abandoned in urban area, taking time to care for them and find them a new home.
The Solo Exhibition Cycle is a series of exhibition projects in the upper lobby of Kino Šiška, prepared each year by a curator of the younger generation.
