Towards the end of March, we’ll dedicate a Thursday evening to two young and promising trios, a Slovenian and an Austrian one. Austrians DIVES are raising eyebrows with charged surf pop, while Ljubljana-based In The Attic won our Špil liga high school band league last year with their carefully conceived indie rock. 2 x 3 = ?!
The trio DIVES, which formed in February 2016 during the Austrian Girls Rock Camp, shook up the Austrian underground with their fresh look at traditional surf rock elements. Their self-titled EP debut, which simply radiates confidence and passion, was released a year later by Austrian indie stalwart SIluh Records and recorded by Wolfgang Möstl (Mile Me Deaf, Sex Jams, Killed By 9V Batteries …). The Vienna natives with hints of L.A. Witch, La Luz and Waxahatchee draw on their mutual friendship and celebrate the carelessness of youth, enveloping listeners in a looped vortex of guitar sounds, the bass line of life in the 21st century and a worldly drum drive. Sincere, fun and convincing.
We’ll warm up with another indie trio, the locally international Ljubljana-based In The Attic. We already got to know Russian singer Tatiana, Australian drummer Christopher and Slovenian guitarist Edvard last year, when they were victorious in the fifth season of our Špil liga. They released their full-length debut Jimmy’s that same year, an album “that discloses its charm surprisingly measuredly and elegantly, is consistent and coherent, while simultaneously – keeping in mind the above-mentioned concerns – hinting at a future when the band could be one of the main forces of the local alternative rock scene” (Radio Študent). The conceptual narratives, harmonic experimentation and influences such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Pile definitely concur.
