After three visits to Šiška with his cult band, the founder and undisputed commander of the thunderous Swans Michael Gira is coming back as we’ve never experienced him before – with a solo acoustic show. He’s joined on tour by a special guest, his Swans compatriot and influential guitarist Norman Westberg with his own solo acoustic performance. Every visit to Ljubljana by these striking men has left a deep impression, and we expect no less this time around.
The legendary New York band Swans has carved an unmistakeable mark on rock music since its formation in the 1980s, with their raw experimental rock and complex soundscapes influencing countless other acts, from Nirvana and Melvins to Tool and Neurosis. But despite the enviable array of excellent musicians who played in the bend through the decades, its driving force, shaman supreme, chieftain and conductor is without a doubt the unmistakeable Michael Gira.
Šiška’s halls still resonate with the sound of the last of the three incredibly loud Swans concerts, but while we wait for Gira to unveil the next iteration of this cult band, he’ll tie us over with a solo acoustic performance. In addition to his solo work, we can also look forward to reworks of familiar material by Swans and his other band Angels Of Light, and even new and unreleased Swans songs.
The evening will be opened by Gira’s colleague, compatriot and co-worker Norman Westberg, whose unique approach to guitar playing has inspired a generation of musicians in a variety of different genres. In the words of another one of our past guests, Lawrence English, “what Norman has created with his solo works is an echoing universe of deep texture and harmonic intensity”, completely transforming the guitar as a primary instrument through a web of outboard processes. It’s clear that the return of these two music giants will be yet another in the line of their unforgettable shows in our Katedrala Hall. In October!
