With untamed energy and fiery performances at festivals such as Le Guess Who?, Trans Musicales and, of course, MENT, the Istanbul trio Lalalar have breathed fresh air into the very popular revival of Turkish rock and psychedelia from the last century. They started 2022 with the opulent funk of their new single announcing their long-awaited debut album, which we’ll have the pleasure of hearing live. . Italian techno/punk ritualists Mombao will join the evening as special guests, taking over the listeners with a unique performance and leading them into a dance trance.
Turkish trio Lalalar are bringing their refreshing psychedelic vortex back to Šiška after winning over both foreigners and locals with their performance at MENT 2020. While their contemporaries draw from the admittedly plentiful treasury of Anatolian rock from the 1970s, Lalalar go a step further – towards timeless folk tunes, sampled through their delicious electronic stews, towards a punk attitude and the dark wave obsession of their hometown’s underground dance floors. The sound, both global and local, nostalgic and futuristic, has left a resounding mark on the web as well, where songs like “İsyanlar” are racking up hundreds of thousands of views.
As Under the Radar found out at MENT, the band also confounds genre concepts with complete conviction in their concerts and has thus diligently prepared the ground for debut album Bi Cinnete Bakar. The heavily anticipated studio album, who also bears the approval of one of the flagbearers of contemporary Turkish music, Gaye Su Akyol, who painted the back sleeve, was released in May this year by Bongo Joe, and will come to life in Šiška a month later. A unique opportunity for an intimate performance by a band that undoubtedly has big things in store – and of course for wild dancing.
Damon Arabsolgar (we met him as a member of Pashmak at MENT 2018) and Anselmo Luisi make up the Mombao duo, a performance art and music project that combines original compositions and traditional songs from different cultures eothin the context of electro rock – as if the famed DFA Records moved from New York to Tehran. Covered in clay and body paint, the performers weave a mystical techno/punk ritual in the middle of the concert venue, leading the audience from a state of deep concentration to a wild, liberating dance, which they also showcased at the Italian X Factor.
