The work of artist Anže Šmalc can be described as non-objective and conceptual, with the aim of reducing the distance between real life and production.
The artist’s primary starting point was and remains a drawing. He gradually develops it through the techniques of painting, graphics, collage and weaving, and in the process tries to isolate it from its formal conditions of creation, to treat it in other contexts, as independent of the technique itself. At this exhibition, he will transfer his process into a tapestry, with which he will create a spatial installation. The transposition of weaving from the state into the exhibition space will transform a formal object into an architectural one.
Anže Šmalc (1991) spent most of his life in the USA with his family. After completing his undergraduate studies in drawing at Arizona State University, he returned to Slovenia to pursue a master’s degree in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana. During his studies, he spent one year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw as part of an academic exchange. He is currently completing his master’s thesis at ALUO. In 2019, he participated in the S02E04 group exhibition at the Ljubljana Town Hall, and in 2021 he participated in the International Student Biennial group exhibition in Split and the Arte Senza Frontiere group exhibition in Izola.
