Two bands that each boldly take heavy, alternative music in new directions in their own way are returning to Ljubljana. Cult Japanese instrumental post-rockers MONO return with a new record after a sold-out 2019 show, while GGGOLDDD landed at the top of many best-of lists with last year’s brutally honest release.
The four-piece MONO have provided an intense concert experience in our parts many times, and during their more than 20 years of existence, they’ve established themselves as an extremely acclaimed group with a completely unique sound. Their original blend of moving orchestral arrangements and dynamic guitar noise, a tireless concert schedule and sold-out shows all over the world have established them as one of Japan’s most successful bands internationally. In 2021, they again went to the studio with their long-time collaborator Steve Albini and recorded their eleventh album, Pilgrimage of the Soul. Another in a series of highlights, the release impressed with masterful dynamics, intensity and detailed compositions.
Already back when they were performing under the shorter name Gold, GGGOLDDD impressed the international public with their hypnotic vision of pop music. During the pandemic, the Dutch band, which also features Slovenian guitarist Jaka Bolič (Leechfeast), was invited to create a special work for the online edition of the famous Roadburn festival. This gave singer Milena Eva the opportunity to process emotions and memories from the past through creation with her bandmate and life partner Thomas Sciarone. The final festival performance was the most watched part of the broadcast and drew comparisons to Portishead and Björk. It also served as a springboard for the 2022 album This Shame Should Not Be Mine. The dark, contemporary pop album inhabits its own sonic universe and received tremendous praise from critics and listeners alike, catapulting the band among the most important bands of these chaotic times.
