Anna B Savage, an original British singer-songwriter who has established herself as one of the most intriguing young performers in the world with her vulnerable sincerity, unforgettable vocals and uncompromising reckoning with the troubles of modernity. She will present her album in|FLUX, released for the City Slang label. Promising local singer-songwriter Dora Tomori will get the evening started with her debut album.
Rolling Stone magazine described her singing as “unforgettable”. In February, The Guardian named her as One to Watch. Cult electronic duo Orbital borrowed her vocals for their record released this year. Her upcoming tour includes some of the biggest shows of her career, including at acclaimed venues like Village Underground. Her second album in|FLUX, released this year on the City Slang label, won praise from critics and listeners alike. It’s no exaggeration to say that Dublin-based Londoner Anna B Savage is currently at the peak of her career so far.
But the path to success is often thorny, as Anna knows well. After a promising EP debut in 2015, she had to face pressures and doubts that almost made her give up her music career. Fortunately for us, the charismatic musician and poet overcame the hardship and served up the extraordinary studio album A Common Turn in 2021, combining her vulnerability, piercing, uncompromising lyrics and unique vocals with stripped-down folk-rock instrumentals. Critics and listeners were impressed, as were Jenny Hval and Father John Misty, who invited her on tour.
With the new record in|FLUX, she continues her recovery, asking new questions both of herself and of the patriarchal society that surrounds us, but not really looking for answers. Instead, with chosen words and elation, she reflects on the complexities and variables of human existence, the pain and pleasure of love, loss, and earthly connection. The musical arrangements are less sparse this time around and also feature the clarinet and saxophone, instruments that Anna dusted after more than 15 years. The final product already has its eyes set on the top of the list of the most interesting releases of this year.
In the past year, young singer-songwriter Dora Tomori has taken her music to small and large stages around Slovenia – among other things, she already warmed up Kino Šiška for Mira Lu Kovacs and performed at Tresk #12. From the minimalist aesthetics of bedroom pop, she has developed a soft, mature indie pop sound, exploring her internal topography and her surroundings through music. With her debut single “New Religion”, influenced by artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Imogen Heap and Julien Baker, she announced her debut album Where No Heartbreak Has Gone, slated for release in April 2023. The record features a raw intimacy inspired by themes ranging from the weather to heartbreak and the teenage exploration of intimate relationships, as brought by the flow of life at her age.
