ARTIST PER MONTH I Nina Goropečnik: Commercial Exhibition

exhibition

free entry

With Commercial Exhibition, artist Nina Goropečnik is returning to her previous work The Objects Must Meet Certain Conditions, presented in 2022 at the exhibition of the same name in the Alkatraz Gallery.

“The artist uses the exhibition to focus on the process itself and to display a form of an ‘x-ray’ of creative procedures: a skeleton of references, thoughts, notes, and pictures from her own archive. She allows viewers to see what cannot be seen with the bare eye – an invisible, never-ending, time-consuming creation process that is more important than all possible outcomes. And it is based mostly on thinking. The idea of reconstructing her personal ‘wall of reference points,’ which physically exists in the room, is the result of the re-working of a timeless sphere in which ideas, influences, and inspirations accumulate – the sphere of the mind. It’s not about objects and documents from the archive, it’s about thought, experience, and actual relation to the content provided by referential objects.” [from the exhibition text by Anita Wach, Alcatraz Gallery, 2022]

In Commercial Exhibition, the artist addresses the evaluation of reference objects that are directly related to her past works of art. She considers their purpose for her artistic creation, and is also interested in the potential of these objects as they pass from one owner to another.

Nina Goropečnik (1993) works in the field of visual and performative art, where she is interested in processuality and questions the relationship between visibility and the viewer. In her work, she explores the boundaries between intimate and public, and she is interested in absence, invisibility and finding a form for the Void — the space of potentiality. In 2022, she completed her master’s studies at the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana. In the same year, she did an internship at WHW Zagreb, and earlier (2018/19) she attended an Erasmus+ exchange at the Iceland University of the Arts. In 2023, she received a scholarship from the ERSTE foundation to attend the Salzburg Summer Academy. Since 2019, she and Rea Vogrinčič have been co-creating the Pita Projekt platform, which received an ALUO Award in the 2019/20 academic year, and in 2023 they were nominated for the YVAA OHO Group Award. She has participated in several group exhibitions, including at ETC. Magazin (UGM Maribor, 2024 and MIDAS Ljubljana, 2024), P74 Gallery (Ljubljana, 2023), DobraVaga Gallery (Ljubljana, 2023), Center for Contemporary Arts (Celje, 2022), Škuc Gallery (Ljubljana, 2021), Verksmidjan a Hjalteyri (Hjalteyri, Iceland, 2018) and Layer House (Kranj, 2018). She has held solo exhibitions at Portal 2-7-7-7-8 (Ljubljana, 2024), Carinarnica (Nova Gorica, 2023), Alkatraz Gallery (Ljubljana 2022), Simulaker Gallery (Novo Mesto, 2021), DobraVaga Gallery (Ljubljana, 2020) and DLUL (Ljubljana, 2020).
