MENT 2018 : Small Really Is Beautiful

Sometimes, small really is beautiful, and Ljubljana’s MENT is that rare thing; a perfectly formed little gem of a festival that still feels grand and significant. In only four years it’s carved out a deserved reputation for excellence, from fans and professionals alike – not only was it was recently voted Best Small Festival and Best Indoor Festival at the EFA Awards in Groningen, but it’s also now generally regarded as eastern Europe’s main showcase event, a hub for bands to reach a wider audience and develop their careers.

LBM Abroad: MENT Festival (Ljubljana, SI 2018)

At an age where I can’t even be bothered to see what’s relevant anymore in the world of music outside of China, I was glad to have the MENT Festival turn me upside down, shake me loose, and remind me that there are bold new sounds happening all around the world for those interested enough to seek them out. And I’m sure as hell going to seek them out now. What more can I say? MENT Festival – you blew my mind.

We’ll warm up with local synth-poppers Futurski, who won us over at our anniversary party in September, then at this year’s MENT Ljubljana.

Young Fathers at MENT Festival, Ljubljana, review: Compelling, visceral, vibrant

Their show remains a strikingly stark, no-nonsense affair; the rhythms clatter against synths and shards of noise, all bathed in a sparse, monochrome light.

10 great new bands from MENT festival : live review

Of course we will have missed a few bands – MENT is a cornucopia of bands mainly playing in the semi-squat venues of Metelkova Mesto – one the largest, and arguably most successful, urban squats in Europe which sprawls across 12,500 sqm of an abandoned army base and has about six venues in its graffiti-strewn mad max old-school space.

ANARCHIST REPUBLIC OF BZZZ, 23. 4. 2018

In April, Ljubljana will join the Anarchist Republic of Bzzz, a flawless collage of genres from noise and jazz to folk and hip-hop, whose citizens also included Archie Shepp, Trevor Dunn, Luc Ex, Arto Lindsay and Marc Ribot.

SOVIET SOVIET, 4. 4. 2018

With their latest album Endless, which, according to CLRVYNT, put punk back into post-punk, Italian trio Soviet Soviet will stop in Ljubljana for the first time, a little over a year since the incident that outraged the global music community.
