Gulag Institute continues to run Tea Parties for Contemporary Art with a view of encouraging the discourse and reflection of contemporary visual art, both in terms of criticism and the dialogue between artists and the public. It is not the aim for the Tea Parties to explore art infrastructure, but the form and contents in contemporary art. At times they also discuss the seemingly familiar concepts like performance, public intervention, art happening or situation.

Why would an artist opt for a time-limited and transient performative expression, i.e. an art form that is difficult to capture and unpredictable? Why would the curator agree and enable such a situation, when would it be placed in a gallery and when in a public space? Is a gallery or an indoor space an intermediate phase between the theatre and the street? To what extent is the situation directed, predicted in advance, staged, and how much interaction with the audience does it allow? Is it about provoking pleasure, voyeurism, discomfort, or a bit of everything? Is the recording of a performance an archive document or an art video? What are the findings originating in actual performances and what is the level of performance as compared with the level abroad? How would artists and curators respond to the common viewers’ reproach about mainly choosing the topics that would shock?

All this and questions from the audience will be discussed by Samira Kentrić, member of the art duo Eclipse who have executed numerous performances with attention-grabbing and challenging issues exploring love and eroticism, often in relation with the current issues in Slovenian society or the assigned social roles; Jurij Krpan, art director of Kapelica Gallery for Contemporary Investigative Arts with an extensive history and experience in domestic an international performance; and Zoran Srdić Janežič who is mainly interested in group art happenings in public spaces. The talk will be hosted by artist and journalist Aleksandra Saška Gruden.

Organised by Gulag Institute for Contemporary Art, co-organised by Kino Šiška.
