After a feverish performance at the Druga Godba festival in 2014, hip-hop revolutionary akua naru is returning to Ljubljana. In addition to older material, she’ll present this year’s EP The Black Magnificent, accompanied by her excellent backing band.
As a child, socially engaged hip-hopper akua naru learned about the work of important activists such as Angela Davis and Malcolm X through the strong, assertive women in her hometown. When she released her debut album The Journey Aflame several years later, it was immediately clear that the revolutionary ideas had fallen on fertile ground. Lyrics honed by a poet’s touch, over musical backdrops ranging from jazz to soul, put akua naru on the musical map as an unstoppable force of liberation and empowerment. This is how we met her in Maribor in 2013 and at the Druga Godba festival a year later, when she brought a packed Gala Hala to a fever pitch.
After four albums, the acclaimed artist, who has also worked with Tony Allen, tUnE-yArDs, Questlove, Mulatu Astatke and more, returns this year with The Black Magnificent EP, on which she collaborated with Brooklyn-based instrumental duo The Ruff Pack. Their music combines the improvisational nature and compositional complexity of jazz with the frenetic energy of hiphop, and the spring 2022 collab EP documents the artists’ understanding of music as sonic activism. In September, akua naru will present it in Šiška, accompanied by her excellent backing band.
