One of the most thrilling bands of this millennium, Algiers, are coming back to Šiška! Upon their return, the band will present their new album SHOOK, created in the iconic way all such masterpieces are made – as the result of a creative outburst of a band on the verge of dissolution and a pantheon of collaborations with some of the most renowned musicians right now.
The list of featured artists on the new, fourth album by Algiers reads like an encyclopedia of contemporary alternative music. Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine), Backxwash, billy woods, Samuel T Herring (Future Islands), Jae Matthews (Boy Harsher) and many others all contributed their perspectives, freshness and diversity to the album, intersecting in eruptions of creativity within the rumbling post-punk framework of the core ensemble. The latter started working on the new album while on the verge of breaking up, when in an attempt to restore their mutual connection, they withdrew from external pressures and devoted themselves to strengthening their friendship and creative inspiration in a den in their native Atlanta. The final product expands listeners’ horizons with some of the most exciting tracks not only of the band’s career, but of contemporary music as a whole.
We’ve hosted the American-British quartet Algiers and its unpredictable blend of post-punk anger, noise ferocity and gospel soul, through which it delivers its sonic manifestos of activism and the fight against the collapsing values of modernity, several times. We first met them as one of the most prominent names of the MENT Ljubljana 2018 festival, then they seduced us again on Valentine’s Day a year later. The band, whose releases regularly land at the top of annual best-of lists, are simply a joy to watch live, and are already looking forward to their return.
Ahead of Algiers, we’ll listen to DUF, the project by tireless Slovenian percussionist Jaka Berger – Brgs (Darla Smoking, Brgstime…). With DUF, he addresses the disintegration of alternative spaces, which are losing their importance in the world of consumerism, which is reflected in the decreasing interest of consumers in alternative thoughts.
