Native Maribor skatepunkers Alo!Stari will be playing Kino Šiška on November 10. The band, which brought skate punk back to the forefront of the Slovenian music scene and found its essence in the Maribor dialect, its “mother” language, has thoroughly refreshed Slovenian music during its three-year career, creating hits such as “Nea vem kam”, “Star”, “Vse bi dal”, “Kaj naj zaj nareim”, etc. In autumn, they conquer Kino Šiška.
To understand the Alo!Stari phenomenon, we have to go back in time. A little further, back to the nineties. To the golden days of the generation that grew up with skateboards in their hands. Back in the days when CDs and cassettes were still traded, when modern technology was still in its infancy with Napster and IRC. In that time, teenagers who didn’t know much about life, met in yards, streets or at the local sports centre. In Maribor, of course, each with their own skateboard. In those days, the music called skate punk was also gaining in popularity and claiming its place in the global music mainstream.
Our lads weren’t allowed to go to concerts yet, so they turned up the music at home. And soon, one plank was replaced by another, the skateboard was replaced by a guitar. The lads strummed, plucked strings, tortured their vocal chords… and learned to play, make and live music. Growing up, they played in various bands (Trash Candy, Happy Ol’ McWeasel, Burning Legion) and toured almost all of Europe. And after two decades, they realised that the nineties were really cool. They just hadn’t known how to play yet, but today they do. And on these solid foundations of a shared story, Alo!Stari was born, named after the members’ usual greeting.
Alo!Stari (Tine Matjašič, Matic Mlakar, Jernej Metež, Matej Kosmačin, Tomaž Medvar) burst onto the Slovenian music scene in 2019 with the song “Nea vem kam”. The nineties and skate punk, which at that time packed alternative venues in our country as well, were once again brought to the fore. A few decades and many tours around Europe later, the lads from Maribor realised that their Styrian, well, Maribor, essence is what defines them. And after years of creating in other bands and foreign languages, the time has come to use the Styrian dialect, the Maribor dialect, if you like, in their original music.
The song “Nea vem kam“ quickly found its audience, and the rest is history – it was followed by “Star”, “Alo!Stari”, “Valovi”, “Vse bi dal”, “Kaj naj zaj naredim”, the debut Pa kaj te s tao je, released in September 2021, and two latest tracks “Prie tako leto” and “Nea guši”. Songs that really show who Alo!Stari are, what they believe in and what they enjoy. And what they think about the world and the times in which we live. In three years, well, just under two, if we exclude the concert break due to force majeure, they performed around Slovenia, and they had a lot of fun. But they haven’t healdined Šiška yet. On Thursday, November 10, Alo!Stari will play Kino Šiška in Ljubljana. The Katedrala Hall will be theirs. And yours. If you don’t know where to go, come to Šiška! Don’t be sorry later!
