The idiosyncratic musical visionary and the godfather of nostalgically leisurely lo-fi retro pop, the unmistakable sound of the 21st century, Ariel Pink is coming to Slovenia for the first time! He’ll take us into his appealing oddball world with the help of his September album, declared by critics to be one of the most impressive indie rock releases of the decade and one of Pink’s best albums ever. He’ll be joined on tour by his buddy Jorge Elbrecht, the frontman of violens, who will present his new retrospective record.
Multi-instrumentalist and singer Ariel Marcus Rosenberg aka Ariel Pink was regarded as an eccentric in his native Los Angeles, for many years recording his music onto cassettes under the influence of various genres and substances, all along developing his own lo-fi sonic aesthetic. In 2004, his unique music caught the eyes of cult psychedelic group Animal Collective, who immediately signed him to their label, but his real breakthrough came after joining renowned label 4AD. There, Pink recorded his first real, professional studio album, Before Today, which shut up all naysayers and was declared one of the best albums of 2010, with Pitchfork even declaring the lead single “Round and Round” the best song of the year.
Since then, Ariel Pink has cemented his status as the godfather of so-called chillwave and hypnagogic pop, dreamily hazy retro pop that draws on the radio-friendly tunes of the 1970s and 1980s with a heady helping of nostalgia. After successful solo albums Mature Themes and Pom Pom, as well as collaborations with stars such as Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, Miley Cyrus, Theophilus London, The Avalanches, Weyes Blood and MGMT, Pink returned to his musical roots on September’s new, tastefully stripped down masterpiece Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, the first released for Brooklyn label Mexican Summer. The album, dedicated to tragic Californian musician Bobby Jameson, has been praised by media such as The 405 and The Needle Drop as one of Pink’s best. We can look forward to a concert by a virtuoso whose unique music, gazing into the nostalgic warmth of youth, seems the perfect fit for reminiscing in the last days of summer.
The evening will be launched by musician and visual artist Jorge Elbrecht, who founded the esteemed artistic collective Lansing-Dreiden at the turn of the millenium, then continued as the frontman of guitar pop band violens, and is currently reviving new wave synth-pop aesthetics as a solo artist. In addition to his friendship with Ariel Pink he has also collaborated with Kirin J. Callinan and Tamaryn, among others, and released the retrospective album of previously unheard material Here Lies this very year.
