Over the course of three decades of existence, the cult German phenomenon Bohren & der Club of Gore have amassed legions of listeners all over the world and millions of streams with their apocalyptic crossover of jazz and ambient music. Come May, they’ll finally play live in Slovenia for the first time.
Founded in 1992, the Bohren & der Club of Gore trio from the Ruhr Area are considered a unicum in the music world, as they command masses of devoted listeners, even though their long-form instrumental compositions aren’t exactly radio-friendly. But there is something devilishly good about their calming music – something that seduces, dreams and wins you over. Some call this the “Bohren vibe”, others use genre labels such as jazz and noir, while others – the band members themselves – describe it as an “unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down-tuned Autopsy sounds”. In any case, the musical experience of Bohren & der Club of Gore is peerless, and its full intensity is experienced especially when performed live.
In their three decades of existence, Bohren & der Club of Gore have released eight studio records of subtle, meditative atmospherics and tension, the latest, Patchouli Blue, in 2020 on Mike Patton’s renowned Ipecac label. The band’s releases have garnered praise from renowned music media such as Pitchfork and The Quietus, and have taken the band around the world. Among others, they’ve performed at renowned festivals such as Roadburn and Amplifest, and in May, they’ll finally introduce us to their virtuosity live in Ljubljana.
Renowned intermedia artist Marko Batista, who works at the intersection of art and science and has been a guest at the 15th Istanbul Biennial, Ars Electronica in Linz, the Berlin Transmediale festival and NET. Audio in London, among others, will perform his sound work Vitreous Sky as part of the evening. Vitreous Sky is a continuation of the author’s artistic contemplation and research of contemporary, post-factual society in relation to technological progress or simply relations in the society–nature–technology triangle in the context of ecocritical discourse, environmental policies and current humanistic concepts.
