Get ready to set it off with Bombataz, a promising quartet from Belgian, who’ll be paying us a visit with their highly danceable jazz-inflected pop songs, pinned to unconventional song structures, in April. They’ll be joined by Mate Ponjević, an established member of the new wave of Croatian music, setting out on his solo career.
FOR FANS OF: MGMT, Prince, Svemirko …
The Brussels-based Bombataz defies categorisation by blending elements from various genres, including jazz, funk, and synthpop, reflecting the members’ shared love for music that extends beyond jazz to encompass all kinds. Regardless of which direction the skilled musicians head into, however, the common threads running through their unconventionally structured songs are catchy melodies and a fondness for the dance floor.
While Bombataz earlier releases leaned towards a playful yet melancholic, pop-oriented sound influenced by artists like Fleetwood Mac and Prince, their 2023 follow-up “Baby Dry My Tears” went back to the indie rock fountain, particularly its more cerebral ends such as Animal Collective. With a focus on English lyrics, the cohesive album showcased Bombataz’s dedication to following their instincts and emotions in creating music that resonates deeply with listeners. Captivating audiences with their confident approach, Bombataz’ musical cocktail hits the spot every time.
Mate Ponjević is an integral member of the new wave of Croatian music, which has given us bands such as Porto Morto, Valentino Bošković and Svemirko, among others. He started his musical journey with the bands Fire in Cairo and Pitaj klince, and is now showing himself in a new light with his solo project. At the end of last year, he began releasing a string of catchy singles that herald his upcoming debut, spanning a wide range of genres, styles and sounds, tied into a cohesive whole by his effortless, sincere vocals. During his visit to Šiška, we’ll get a glimpse of the musical kaleidoscope that awaits us on the upcoming release.
