Return to the forest! is a modern man’s appeal for primeval existence, harmony and expression of one’s true self. Cohabitation, longing, knowledge, man in the total image of the world of animals and nature. New humanism of the micro- and macrocosm. Offering a virtual threshold for contemporary visual practices, postmodernism has opened anew the space for intimate searches, transformations, identifications, sensations and fantastic articulations in fine art.
A seemingly tiny human figure positioned in grand landscape is an important point of entry to understand the visual art by the academy trained painter Brina Torkar. The shooter takes us to the centre of activity (helping us to overcome the opposites, to identify with the path of the arrow or with the target); as observers we halt at the sunlit clearing amidst the mighty trees; or we can take the figure at the brink with the mask-like face, typically turning its back to us, to look at the great forest of the unknown. Eventually the painter wants to use the figure to express her desire for freedom and immediate contact with nature. In terms of motifs, Brina’s paintings are part of the symbolic and romantic tradition, extending through renaissance all the way to the classical Greek world.
