Renowned American band Built to Spill, whose music shaped the sound of indie rock at the turn of the millennium and established them as one of the most influential names in the genre, will perform in Slovenia for the first time! The trio will visit Šiška while touring in support of their excellently received eighth album When the Wind Forgets Your Name, released by Sub Pop.
Led by founder and sole permanent member Doug Martsch, Built to Spill have been creating influential and critically acclaimed indie rock music since the early 1990s, tightly woven around artful guitar lines, overwhelming emotionality and bold creativity. The 1990s albums There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like a Secret helped bridge the gap between grunge and the ubiquitous indie rock explosion of the 2000s, all landing among Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of the 1990s. The stamp Martsch left on the genre with Built to Spill is immeasurable and clearly heard on early albums by bands such as Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse and Band of Horses.
The success story of Built to Spill did not end with the new millennium. Martsch eventually returned to his original concept of rotating members and successfully kept up with the times as a result. He managed to do that last year as well, when he returned to where it all began for him – Seattle, where Built to Spill’s eighth record, When the Wind Forgets Your Name, was released in October by the famed local Sub Pop label. The album once again received critical acclaim and provided another highlight in the band’s long career. We’ll be able to listen to the new songs live at the end of June, when the band will finally visit Slovenia as part of their first European tour since 2019.
Oruã, an indie group from Rio de Janeiro, anchors its sound in a blend of post-punk, krautrock, Brazilian guitar, and noise. The band was formed during the recent turbulent period in Brazilian history, emerged from improvisation sessions that mixed various genres. Two international tours brought Oruã closer to the foreign market, and also to Doug Martsch, who became enamoured by the band and enlisted two of its members to play on When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Though they aren’t part of the Built to Spill live line-up, Oruã has been invited to open for the band on its recent tours.
