Goethe-Institut Ljubljana celebrates its 10th anniversary with the group Čompe – in cooperation with Kino Šiška.
The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. It promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation. The institute conveys a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about cultural, social and political life in Germany. Its cultural and educational programs encourage intercultural dialogue and enable cultural involvement. They strengthen the development of structures in civil society and foster worldwide mobility. The language department organizes workshops and classes for teachers of German as a foreign language and provides information about the exam system of the Goethe-Institut. The institute supports multilingualism in Slovenia and promotes German as the second foreign language in public and private schools as well as in other institutions.
In Ljubljana, Goethe resides halfway between Rožnik – which is among the residents of Ljubljana probably the most popular hill – and the old city center. The still young institute, which plays a vital role in the cultural landscape and exchange between Slovenia and Germany, has become a place of dialogue.
Translated into the language of art, the word ČOMPE means nothing else but potatoes in the dialect of Trenta and Zilja valleys. Following a flash of inspiration, it came to be used as the name of the music band Čompe founded in 1994/95, but as years went by, the word slowly acquired other connotations among our listeners, who are mostly unfamiliar with the original meaning of the word. Today, the word Čompe is incresingly associated with the band and its music. Thus the sentence “I’m going for some Čompe” no longer means “I’m going to eat some boiled potatoes”, but rather “I’m going to the concert of Čompe, the band”. But let’s leave this problem to linguists.
