Dijana Matković is returning to Kino Šiška after nine years, when she presented her literary debut In the Name of the Father.
Therefore, it is not unusual for the second book to be titled Why I Don’t Write, as it talks about the exact obstacles that prevent those “from below” from creating and existing. Her conversation with editor Aljoša Harlamov will be followed by a short musical performance by the young musician Tadej Kern, with lyrics by Matković and visuals by artist Vesna Messec.
Writer, translator and editor Dijana Matković is returning to Kino Šiška after the publication of her literary debut, the collection of short stories In the Name of the Father. After a span of almost a decade, it is not unusual for the second book, titled Why I Don’t Write, to talk about the obstacles that prevent those “from below” from creating and existing. The essayistic novel opens up topics that are almost forbidden to talk about in our country: economic and social inequality and class, which condition us both socially and psychologically, as well as the issues of immigration, identity policies, lack of housing solutions and consequently the possibilities for survival. The way out, as written and lived by the author, is in connection: both in attempts to build political communities and in friendly creative meetings, such as this one.
She will talk about the novel and society with the book’s editor Aljoša Harlamov, and she also wishes to enter into an exchange with the audience.
The discussion will be followed by a short musical performance by musician Tadej Kern with lyrics by Dijana Matković and visuals by artist Vesna Messec. The young artistic couple will perform in public for the first time. As a promising producer and musician with an exceptional vocal expression and – as the editor of the world-famous Trash Gang label –, Kern is well acquainted with music trends. He faces these trends with his own poetic voice, bared to vulnerability, thus immediately drawing listeners in. Vesna Messec, also intimately connected with Kern, is perfecting her illustration and will accompany him with soft, flowing images.
We can expect an intimate yet open and friendly ambiance, “a community of the awake, a community of the wounded”, as “it is impossible to be awake and unharmed at the same time”, as Dijana Matković says in Why I Don’t Write.
