Whereas “dosada” (boredom) reminds us of the uncomfortable feelings and the array of passive and lethargic associations connected to it, the concept of “dokolica” is in tight correlation with hedonism and represents a time of deliberately chosen nothingness which is experienced with happiness and joy.
The exhibition Dokolica consists of prints and zines by Belgrade-based artists that we have invited (Jelena Milićević, Kristina Simić, Tamara Milošević, Teodora Nešković, Sofija Pašalić, Andreja Krstić, Pavle Trifunović, Petar Micić, Andrija Čugurović, Miloš Ćosović – Desko) to help us rethink the concept of leisure time and its potential, and how to reestablish it as key.
In an age when productivity is imperative and our daily lives prove to be continuous exhaustion with almost no time left for slowing down, allowing yourself to have daily moments of leisure could be seen as a form of everyday resistance. In their language, form and style, the artists explore the notion of rest and all the small and important gestures for fighting grind culture and the internalised idea that we should be working all the time, simultaneously revealing the beauty and the power of leisure. They are exploring free time as a necessity, protest, self-care, safe space, sometimes even as a luxury, and trying to reclaim laziness and idleness, defending rest and leisure time as spaces for resistance.
