We have some very good news. The master of keyboards and musical notation, composer and improviser is preparing a first-class musical evening for a seated audience in the large hall of Kino Šiška.
It is a new project by Drago Ivanuša, who found inspiration in the unforgettable works of Slovenian filmmakers. Works that were also greatly influenced by the music of the host of the evening. But Drago would not be Ivanuša if he did not transform them in his own insightful way and put a new authorial stamp on them. We say this as a teaser for the first satisfaction of curiosity.
To look at the history and referentiality of the event, the following should be noted:
With the arrival of a new generation of filmmakers in Slovenia in the nineties and the new century – Janez Burger, Jan Cvitkovič, Damjan Kozole, Vinci Vogue Anžlovar, Igor Šterk, Andrej Košak and others, Slovenian film at that time was full of optimism and interesting, watchable films were being created. Their music was different, fresh, and listenable even outside of movie theaters.
At the end of the 90s, there was still a certain naivety, capitalism had not yet completely conquered us, human themes were at the forefront, but many were deeply poetic and beautiful. And yes, it seemed as if the future still existed. Today, when 20 years and more have passed since then, we can recognize with distance how the aforementioned films influenced our time and the society in which we lived at the time, enough time has passed that we can feel these films and their time again – through music.
The concert is not just about re-playing film themes, the ambition is greater, to create something new, something that definitely sounds like the present and is powered by memories of another time. An important element of the concert is the visual part, video and light, which, like music, strives to create new images using film material. In this case, music and stage visuals are like a film lens through which we see something we have already seen and heard – this time in a new way. Julij Zornik, this year’s Prešeren Fund awardee for film sound design, will also add his original sound contribution to one of the compositions.
The concert is also a tribute to the actors Jernej Šugman and Petar Musevski, who passed away too soon.
Drago Ivanuša received two Vesna awards at the Slovenian Film Festivals (Ruševine, Cirkus Fantasticus), the Golden Lion of the Future in Venice (Bread and Milk), films with his music have received awards at numerous film festivals around the world, and in 2023 he received the Prešeren Fund Award for his work.
