Druga Godba and Kino Šiška present:
VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ (ML)
Vieux Farka Touré, guitar, vocals – Marshall Henry, bass – Adama Kone, calabash, drums
Although he’s been known as the Hendrix of the Desert since he started out in 2006, Vieux Farka Touré only attracted truly global attention when he teamed up with cross-genre Texans Khruangbin in 2019. The resulting album (Ali, 2022) recast eight songs by Vieux’s father Ali Farka, that most legendary of African musicians. There wasn’t much adapting to be done: if there’s one son on this planet capable of bringing his father’s legacy into the future while preserving the essence of the Malian musical tradition and adding his own personality to the mix, it’s Vieux. In fact, we were already well-aware of this back in 2008, when he first appeared at Druga Godba. Last year also saw the release of Les Racines, his first record for the World Circuit label, which had been home to all of Ali’s albums. It’s as if things have come full circle: father and son destined to meet on the banks of the Niger and conquer the world together, over and over again.
FAIZAL MOSTRIXX (UG)
If Kinshasa was one of the musical centres of the world half a century ago, that baton has now firmly passed to Kampala. With the support of labels, producers, studios and the legendary Nyege Nyege festival, there has been an extraordinary blossoming of musical and artistic creativity in the Ugandan capital over the last few years, one that has changed the history of African music and produced a new electronic sound that threatens to take over the world. One of its most intriguing proponents is Faizal Mostrixx, a dizzying talent whose skills encompass music, choreography and contemporary dance, and whose Afrocosmic energy continues to keep him way ahead of the pack. His first full-length album will be released by Ljubljana’s own Glitterbeat on the day of his performance at Druga Godba. Expect him to electrify the main stage at Kino Šiška like few before him, with an Afrofuturism and a new brand-new dance sound you’ll find impossible to resist.
HARi ViDERCi (AT)
Hari Viderci, vocals, bass – Herbert Pirker, drums
Now here’s a question: what happens when the Austrian jazz scene’s two biggest talents decide to have a go at Schlager, that most Central European of pop forms? Answer: a direct and rackety assault on the senses, full of punk energy and a healthy dose of humour (or perhaps a theatre performance with the most perfect dramatic arc). Brutal and soft, brilliant and absurd, hypnotic and hysterical: get ready for the festival extravaganza of 2023!
LILIANE CHLELA (CA/LE)
Producer, hybrid DJ and performer Liliane Chlela, who divides her time between Montreal and Beirut, is one the brightest stars in the current firmament of Arabic electronic and experimental music. Gifted with a multi-sensory spirit of adventure, she has developed a range of audio and visual skills that she puts to thrilling use in her films, installations and performances. Her multimedia show at Kino Šiška will be one of three different appearances on three different stages across the festival. Expect a wildly diverse and bold set of sounds that will shift your auditory dial just that little bit further forward. The future starts here!
