“Objektivno”, a regular section in Objektiv, the Saturday supplement to Dnevnik newspaper, has been presenting the potential of integral approaches in media coverage by means of empirical data journalism. Data, text and graphic elements are treated as inseparably linked and equivalent elements.
The first and still the only periodic project in Slovenian media combining data and graphics was initiated by the then editor Miran Lesjak and art director Samo Ačko who invited prize-winning designers Aljaž Vindiš, Ajda Bevc and Aljaž Vesel to participate. The chosen topics are explored thoroughly by respective authors: they perform the research, make the concept, process and interpret data and finally make the infographic.
Since its launch in July 2012, the project has attracted the attention of readers as well as expert audiences (design, statistics, journalism), and won several expert awards.
The success of this section has prompted several visual journalism projects to appear in the regular edition of Dnevnik (such as Where your child should enrol?, and an infographic on NSA wiretapping). The section provides the space for media experimenting, enabling Dnevnik to lead the way in applying an integral approach to contents in the wider regional media sphere.
