Only rarely, so much is said in just six letters. And when it comes to Xiu Xiu, their roles are limitless: always adequate, always provocative, always surprising, always unravelled, always brilliant.
A gem of live performances in the US independent music scene, having the weirdest of names and exploring the weirdest of topics in their lyrics, the experimental art pop band Xiu Xiu is returning to Kino Šiška to present the darkest album this year, “Angel Guts: Red Classroom” (Polyvinyl/ Bella Union; 2014), named after a 1970s Japanese erotic film.
The uncompromising music creation of the Los-Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart and his stage partner Angela Seo, Xiu Xiu is among the first bands focusing primarily on straightforwardness, honesty, authenticity, and own expression, and doing it without choosing the means. Numerous editions, side projects and extensive international touring ever since 2002 have been part of a sharp and brutally honest document on Jamie’s personal life, experience and interpretations.
Xiu Xiu have performed in the studio or live with the likes of Grouper, Michael Gira, Deerhoof, Carla Bozulich, Nitzer Ebb, Larsen, Little Annie, Oxbow, Lawrence English, Zola Jesus, Devendra Banhart and Baby Dee, and collaborated with visual artists, such as Monika Gryzmala, David Horvitz and Dahn Vo.
