Japanese comics aka manga have a rich history that rivals that of Western comics.
Katarina Kunstelj will present the history of manga, from its beginnings on scrolls, to American pirated issues. We’ll learn about the role that ukiyo paintings (woodblock prints) had in the creation of manga, the transition from political satire to the numerous light-hearted genres that we know today, and the transformation of Japanese comics into the various local versions we can find around the world.
Katarina Kunstelj graduated in Japanese Language and Culture from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. Several years ago, she conducted a survey of Japanese subculture on the Slovenian market, with a focus on manga and in collaboration with the French research team Manga Network and the University of Kobe, Japan. Last year, she established and became the editor of the first Slovenian magazine of translated Japanese comics, titled MAGnet manga.
