The always welcome acquaintances of the local audience, one of the most expressive vocal sorceresses in contemporary music and long-time Swans collaborator Jarboe and renowned contemporary lute player and composer Jozef van Wissem, are returning to Ljubljana. During their first visit to Šiška, they will also treat us to completely new collaborative material.
American singer and musician Jarboe rose to prominence in the 1980s as the only constant member of the original line-up of the legendary Swans besides founder Michael Gira. With bold vocal experimentation, melodic diversity ranging from gospel blues to bewitching screaming, and stunning expressiveness, she has established herself as one of the most intriguing and acclaimed performers in the world of extreme music, collaborating with a range of music icons such as Blixa Bargeld, A Perfect Circle, Phil Anselmo and others. She has impressed us in Ljubljana several times, and this time we can also expect material from her April release skin blood women roses, a rerecorded limited release from 1987 on which she also collaborated with Gira.
The modern troubadour Jozef van Wissem has travelled the world with his black, custom-made instrument from which he extracts mystical, timeless sounds, establishing himself as a master of the lute. With his pure, sincere music, he opposes the technological madness of the world and creates intense, intimate compositions that have won over collaborators such as Zola Jesus as well as the film world, making him one of the most influential contemporary composers. Among other things, cult director Jim Jarmusch entrusted him with the soundtrack to Only Lovers Left Alive, which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival. He has previously performed in Ljubljana as part of the Sonica Classics series by MoTA – Museum of Transitory Art, and in March he released the album BEHOLD! I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW.
As part of their first joint performance in Ljubljana, Jarboe and Van Wissem will, in addition to their solo material, also present new collaborative works created as part of a residency at London’s Cafe OTO.
