KING KRULE I SOLD OUT

+ Okay Kaya

Following his triumphant sold-out concert in 2018, King Krule, one of the most innovative and exciting musicians of his generation, is returning to Šiška with a brand-new album!

FOR FANS OF: Mac DeMarco, Dean Blunt, Ariel Pink …

Due in June via XL Recordings, Space Heavy took shape over the course of King Krule’s commutes between the London and Liverpool, the places he called home from 2020 to 2022. Finding himself fascinated by the notion of “the space between” during his commutes, the result is an album that inhabits the deepest reaches of the subterranean sonic world that the generational artist has constructed over the course of his career. Stepping into the height of his artistic powers, King Krule’s music on Space Heavy coalesces into a wizened, dynamic body of work that reveals new elements with each listen.

King Krule is the musical moniker of English singer-songwriter and musician Archy Ivan Marshall. Marshall, who was born in 1994 in London, first gained attention under the stage name Zoo Kid with his self-released debut single “Out Getting Ribs” in 2010. He later adopted the name King Krule, releasing his debut album 6 Feet Beneath the Moon in 2013, to great acclaim and viral success. He has released several critically acclaimed albums since then, as well as collaborated with artists such as Mount Kimbie and Earl Sweatshirt.

King Krule’s distinctive deep and gravelly voice, combined with his poetic lyrics, creates a hauntingly melancholic and introspective atmosphere, often touching on themes of alienation, loneliness, and self-reflection. He incorporates elements of jazz into his music, utilizing intricate guitar riffs and saxophone solos, as well as samples from old jazz recordings, continuously pushing the boundaries of his sound and capturing the gritty, urban landscapes of life in the city. “Upon hearing it, one gets the idea that the popularity of such artists mean there is still hope for music with soul,” wrote 24ur.com at Krule’s previous visit of Šiška, and we’re looking forward to experiencing that hope again in October.

Like King Krule, Okay Kaya, an American artist with Norwegian roots, languidly meanders between emotional sincerity and tongue-in-cheek mischief, which can lead her to a flipped cover of Cher’s maximalist “Believe” and a piercing response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, or to intense questioning of her own subconscious. The common threads running through her work are the delicate, soft guitars, seductive beats, intimate vocals and unpredictable synths, placing the protégé of the renowned independent label Jagjaguwar at the forefront of a new generation of contemporary female creators.
