Fresh off of topping the Billboard Blues chart and with a Grammy nomination in tow, the American roots rock phenomenon Larkin Poe is coming to Šiška for the first time. In recent years, sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, who’ve toured with the likes of Elvis Costello and Conor Oberst, have grown into one of the most convincing contemporary roots rock acts around. They’re coming with a full band and a new album, Self Made Man.
When they were starting out, their strong Southern harmonies, heavy guitar riffs and humming slide guitars won Larkin Poe comparisons to the legendary Allman Brothers, a collaboration with renowned musician and producer T Bone Burnett, and the title of “Best Discovery of Glastonbury 2014”. The real breakthrough, however, came with the Lovell sisters’ fourth album Venom & Faith, released towards the end of 2018 and nominated for the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
In the midst of growing international attention and preparation for a new album release, the quarantine lockdown entered into force, but Larkin Poe didn’t let it throw them off. Their new album Self Made Man was released in June 2020, again released by the confident sisters’ own independent label Tricki-Woo Records. Two weeks later, the album already topped the Billboard Blues chart, and the band started playing the new material online in light of the live gig shutdown.
Slovenian concert fans have already witnessed the live energy of Larkin Poe at the Okarina Festival, part of the band’s first major European tour in 2019. Onstage, the Lovell sisters exude extreme concert vitality and relaxed communication, just the thing to break the lengthy current abstinence.
We’ll warm up with Ryan McMullan, a talented singer-songwriter whose sublime voice and charming melodies bring to mind Paolo Nutini or a young Tom Waits. As befits a youth from a seaside town in Northern Ireland, McMullan spent many years honing his craft at local pubs and eventually attracted the attention and praise of celebrities such as Ed Sheeran and Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol). Today, he is considered one of the most promising Northern Irish performers.
