The cathedral in Algeria, called „Our Lady of Africa”, is photographed behind a branch, so that you can see the space that separates it from the sea. It looks like it is sitting on the shore, which is not true. Due to the cathedral’s size, it is hard to notice an unfinished house, a leaning shack with two or three palm trees, bushes and fields.
When you pass through the door, facing the sea, leaving the freshness inside, you spend a slow, long day, walking the streets, waving a stick in front of a dog, having a mint tea and a cookie, staring at the fence of the Botanical Garden Hamma, and then continuing ahead. Bits of pistachios stuck between molars, and the sting of a pin when the sweetness hits the tooth. You carelessly pass by someone and look at them meaningfully, because observing others works differently here. Perhaps the gaze is longer and more meaningful because the expectations are also like that. Time stands still, so how come this is the last day of vacation? The snake-like letters saying “Roadworks”. The works last for days. Then you tell me the street is still impassable to cars. As we went down and hit the shore, I saw thin lines forming from the waves and currents. A hand on the steering wheel later, and the rhythmic lights passing through my retina, as I sat back after dinner, thinking – you’re used to all of this. The landscape becomes familiar to me through your everyday life. If you weren’t around, all this would be very strange indeed.
“Love Is Like Life, Only Longer” is an exhibition of photographs showcasing images from 1995 to 2022, depicting an imaginary storyboard, mapping the continuity of excitement and joy that occurs in physical contact with others and with water.
