She carves canyons, fertilises fields, creates rapids, nesting grounds and deep pools. People drink her water, write poems about her, harness her energy, and fight over her. The Sava River is a liquid connection between four countries and countless ecosystems.
At 84 minutes long, the documentary One for the River: The Story of Sava is a proper feature film. The material for the film was shot by the production team of the 13-time award-winning film The Undamaged last year while rowing along the entire course of the Sava in Slovenia; from Podkoren and Bohinj, a team of four kayakers rowed for 11 days all the way to Jesenice in the Dolenjska region. Among the 258 kilometres covered, they found a bunch of adventures, complications, realisations and insights into the uncertain future of this beautiful river.
The Sava River in Slovenia connects quite different regions, high mountains with the Pannonian Plain and many interesting places. She is home to countless animals and plants, including increasingly rare ones – these are what the kayakers were looking for while rowing. Not so long ago, the river was the main traffic route, but even before that, her gravel-covered banks near Ljubljana stretched over a kilometre wide. Although already heavily damaged by dams and industry, in recent decades the Sava has once again become full of life and potential for us all to really get to know her. Join four mischievous kayakers as they paddle across Slovenia, getting to know the Sava River’s wild past, dark history, colourful present and uncertain future.
