The Girl Can’t Help It
USA, 1956, DCP, colour/ b&w, 98 minutes
directed by Frank Tashlin
screenplay Frank Tashlin, Herbert Baker based on Do Re Mi by Garson Kanin
cinematography Leon Shamroy
cast Tom Ewell, Jayne Mansfield, Edmond O’Brien, Julie London, Ray Anthony, Barry Gordon, Henry Jones, John Emery, Juanita Moore, Fats Domino, The Platters, Little Richard and his Band, Gene Vincent and his Blue Caps, The Treniers, Eddie Fontaine, The Chuckles, Abbey Lincoln, Johnny Olenn, Nino Tempo, Eddie Cochran
A simple plot – a gangster hires a failed press agent to make his blonde bombshell girlfriend with no talent at all a star singer – is turned by director Frank Tashlin into a feast for the eyes and ears based on the “spectacular cinemascope format” and “wonderful natural colours from De Luxe Laboratories”. Indeed, the girl can’t help it if ice should melt because of her, if lenses in glasses should break and milk should boil over.. Or, to use the words of Tom Ewell, “the bloke from The Seven Year Itch”, she “will cause seven-million times the itch” of Marilyn Monroe. So head into the 1950s to have a chance to nod to the “stereophonic sound” and the rhythm of Be-Bop-A-Lula by Gene Vincent, 20 Flight Rock by Eddie Cochrane, Cry Me A River by the sensuous Julie London and, of course, The Girl Can’t Help It by the electric Little Richard. Not to mention The Platters, Fats Domino and many many others.
Tashlin’s bursting, lush satirical extravaganza “literally defines the film as it was in the 1950s” (says John Waters about one of his top ten films). It was also praised to the skies by Truffaut, whereas Godard even coined the term “Tashlinesque” with regard to it. Wim Wenders proclaimed it his favourite musical and his “definitive guilty pleasure”, and the film even contributed its share to the collaboration of Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

BOŠTJAN TACOL: PIN-UP
exhibition of photographs
»The first thing you will notice about Boštjan Tacol’s photographs, are their intense vibrancy, their mastery of color and light. His work is truly a joy to behold–immediately catching your eye and pulling you into a nostalgic place. The images have the uncanny ability to carry us away, even as we remain rooted in our digital age. Not often is a photographer able to appeal to your sense of humanity and the joy of life so consistently–appeal to the notion that no matter how technological our lives have become, no matter how frightening and open and expansive the world may seem, anchored in all of us is a sense of joy, a sense of fun, a sense of color.«- Mike Joyce, Literary Orphans
Boštjan Tacol is an art historian, professional photographer and photojournalist who has been active for more than 15 years. He has so far also established himself as a successful portrait and editorial photographer. Being a great fan of rock ‘n’ roll music and the related culture and aesthetics of the times past, it is no coincidence for pin-up girls to have been a favourite motif in Boštjan’s work for a number of years.
