PLOHO + STADT

concert

New wave postpunk from industrial Novosibirsk meets EBM/darkwave from the Donetsk mining region! Ploho, the extremely influential protégés of the Artoffact label, will cool off with their sharp lo-fi postpunk and VHS aesthetics, while the returning STADT will take us to the very brink of his chaos.

Ploho is a postpunk/new-wave band formed in 2013 in Novosibirsk, a major industrial centre in Siberia. Deriving their lo-fi sound from their passion for 1980s Soviet and British new-wave and tempering it with their lack of resources and absence of proper studio equipment, they developed an influential sound combining cold loneliness of the Siberian industrial megapolis with traditional post-punk. Their stories of the pointlessness of struggling with a police state are tinged with irony and glimpses of hope, romanticising the unremarkable lives of ordinary guys nostalgic for the VHS aesthetics of the 1990s and early 2000s.

The band signed to the acclaimed Canadian label Artoffact Records in 2020. In February 2022, they started recording their latest album When the Soul Sleeps, their second for Artoffact, a process that was interrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The tragic events heavily influenced the album and the band, which officially left Russia and relocated to Belgrade after finishing the release.

Belgrade is also where Ukrainian STADT ended up in 2022 because of the armed conflict in his native Donetsk. The EBM/darkwave project by Dmytro Filiushyn features a meaningful, inherently industrial sound, characteristically teetering on the verge of chaos and supercharged by the wild rock energy of 1990s grunge. Amping up the tension to the max during his performances, STADT introduces audiences into a state of hypnosis, presenting abstract images of his hatred of himself, of the secret corners of his persona, and an attempt to escape from his oppressive thirst.
