In the lecture, we will focus on Japanese comics from their post-war beginnings to a cultural and economic phenomenon that has transcended the borders of Japan.
What are manga anyway, when and how did they start and what separates them from other comics? Looking at examples, we will shed light on their demographic and genre breadth, the difference between commercial and alternative production, their formal and substantive features, and the specifics of the comic book language and its symbols, all with the aim of gaining insight into how manga, despite its cultural remoteness, conquered a global audience and pop culture, becoming Japan’s most profitable cultural export.
Eva Ule, a student of Slovene studies and comparative literature, literary critic and editor at the online platform Koridor, will take us into the varied worlds of Japanese comics.
