For the first time ever, one of the most thrilling post-punk bands of the 21st century is coming to Ljubljana. Shame, the incendiary five-piece at the forefront of Britain’s post-punk resurgence, are rampaging their way over to Šiška with their new album Food for Worms, hailed their best yet by critics and listeners alike.
FOR FANS OF: Idles, Sleaford Mods, Viagra Boys …
Shame came up through the ranks of The Windmill in Brixton, an iconic South London live music venue that has birthed some of the most exciting bands of the resurgent British post-punk scene, among the Black Midi, Squid, and Black Country, New Road. Channelling their pint-sloshing vitriol into the incendiary 2018 debut album Songs of Praise, Shame, one of post-punk’s greatest hopes, embarked on a cross-continental joyride, playing everything from local dive bars to major festivals, with every night as likely to end at the emergency room as at the afterparty. When the realities of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle they’d devoted themselves to finally caught up with them – barely out of their teens – a hard reset was in order.
Their 2021 follow-up Drunk Tank Pink echoed global pandemic frustrations, drawing on the band’s self-imposed touring break to seek a new identity. But though the release was acclaimed like its predecessor, it was this year’s Food for Worms that fully hit the mark. Hailed the five-piece’s finest album yet by the likes of Pitchfork and The Needle Drop, the release recaptures the chaotic early years, the energy that fuelled those wild shows and long nights, but handles it with hard-won experience and maturity. Fulfilling the promised hype, the band’s greatness is on full display, again setting them ahead of the pack of contemporaries, followers, and imitators. Their gigs remain a blast of proper live music fun, a thrilling rollercoaster of showmanship, riffs, and communal catharsis that’s sure to sear itself into your brain. It’d be a shame to miss them when they finally hit up Ljubljana in November.
Šajzerbiterlemon, an alternative rock band from Belgrade formed in 2014, quickly gained prominence in the regional music scene with their dynamic performances and captivating music videos, as well as by featuring on the far-reaching Hali Ggali – a compilation album that showcased the hottest young bands in Belgrade. The follow-up to their successful 2019 debut, 2022’s Na dugačkim poljima, won favour with both fans and critics, establishing them as a pivotal Serbian band of the new generation. The four-piece has been lauded by media outlets for their powerful music and contributions to the alternative rock scene, and they’ve played influential festivals such as Exit, Ment, and Europavox.
