Two new records await us at the beginning of June to kick off the proper summer evenings, both imbued with a Zappan ethos and youthful lightness. They’re the work of skilled Slovenian bands Svojat and Kavasutra.
FOR FANS OF: Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Buldožer …
The Ljubljana power trio Svojat, consisting of Andrej Fon, Vid Drašler and Ivo Poderžaj, slaloms at full speed through no-wave, avant-garde blues, desert punk, Beefheartian Ludism and free improvisation, and the band’s self-titled debut was declared the best Slovenian album of 2020 by Radio Študent. This year, the time has finally come for the successor, Ošili me modro. In May, it will serve up six new tracks that celebrate childish wisdom, spontaneity and exuberance in their musical exploration.
Kavasutra, a well-honed “jazz-art-rock-no-drugs” collective from the Gorizia region, is also characterized by exuberance, fuelled by a genre-busting cocktail of musical creativity. Trained young musicians with a funk step, prog imagination and a psychedelic palette playfully toss around phrases and sound fragments, and their second album arrives this year as well, continues their inquisitive musical reflection. We already got a glimpse of the new releaseat this year’s MENT, when Kavasutra drew the attention of local as well as foreign visitors with their appealing musical madness, but the full shebang awaits us in June.
