Helmed by their sonic shaman-in-chief Michael Gira, the inimitable Swansre returning to Šiška! Get ready to be transported to a world of intense soundscapes and mind-bending music as Swans unleash their legendary sound upon the crowd straight from their upcoming new album The Beggar.
Swans are a thunderous rock band that has been pushing the boundaries of experimental music for over four decades. With a sound that is both chaotic and hypnotic, they have established themselves as one of the most influential and innovative bands of their generation, leaving their mark on everyone from Nirvana and Tool to liturgy and Car Seat Headrest.
The band was founded by Michael Gira in 1982 and is today comprised of a revolving cast of musicians, selected by Gira for both their musical and personal character, but their sound remains as uncompromising and powerful as ever. Further proof of this can be found in their extensive discography, with albums such as My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky, The Seer, and To Be Kind regularly named among the top albums of their respective years and decades.
As we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing in Šiška several times, Swans’ live performances are a truly transcendent experience, combining elements of industrial, punk, and avant-garde music to create a mesmerizing wall of sound. Their music is characterized by repetitive rhythms, drones, and haunting vocals, which can take the listener on a journey through the darker and more intense aspects of the human experience.
During their visit to Šiška in May, Gira and the gang will also present material from the long-awaited upcoming album The Beggar, the band’s sixteenth. In addition to Gira and former members of Swans, it also features collaborators from bands such as Insect Ark and Xiu Xiu, as well as Ben Frost, and the record will be available exclusively for purchase at the event. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to their music, this Swans concert is not to be missed.
We’ll start the evening with a performance by Norman Westberg, a long-time member of Swans and Gira collaborator. Though he is not a member of the current live ensemble, he will be in charge of opening the evening’s ceremonies.
