In April, the Slovakian champions of instrumental post-rock, shoegaze and prog, The Ills, who were one of the highlights of 2017’s MENT Ljubljana festival according to Clash Magazine, will pay us another visit. Lats time they treated us to their breakthrough fourth album Ornamental Or Mental, while this time, they’ll present their brand new album, Disco Volante / Mt. Average, released in February. Ahead of The Ills, the magical ŠKM banda, one of the most important bands on the contemporary Slovenian music scene, will warm us up with their new album.
The Bratislava-based quartet The Ills combines elements of post-rock, math rock, shogaze and prog rock in its powerful instrumental music, shining especially live. At the performances of these experienced musicians, their intense musical atmosphere collides with a punk attitude and even hardcore drive. The intertwining of ethereal gentleness and dark chaos has won them fans all over the world, including the journalists of KEXP Radio Seattle and BBC Radio Scotland, and at festivals such as MENT Ljubljana, Iceland Airwaves, Eurosonic Noorderslag, Pohoda, Waves Vienna and more.
Following their exceptional performance at MENT Ljubljana 2017, the band is returning with a brand new album, the two-parter Disco Volante / Mt. Average. The first part was guided by guitarist Miro Luky and develops the band’s classic sound, while the second was guided by the other guitarist, Martin Iso Krajčír, boldly venturing towards new horizons. The whole feels like a musical adventure across dreamy landscapes, epic walls of guitar and new sonic textures, constantly keeping listeners at the edge of their seats in anticipation of what comes next.
Before The Ills we’ll travel to the Prekmurje region alongside local quartet ŠKM banda, who have released their fifth album, nouvi sad, this year. The excellent record was born out of a five-year creative hiatus following the release of Panontikon, “one of the most important Slovenian music highlights of the decade” (Mladina), which was brought on by the work of guitarist Iztok Koren in one of Slovenia’s most prominent music exports at the moment, the Širom trio. Nouvi sad still flows within the band’s musical reality called post-jazz, but also driftss towards the harder sonic milieu characteristic of their earlier creative period. However, the unwritten rule still holds: ŠKM banda is a band you fall in love with at first listen.
